The use of blessed thistle, or Cnicus benedictus, can be traced all the way back to the Middle Ages. Back in the day, it was believed to possess special healing properties and at times throughout history, even the power to protect one from evil (ooh). Fun fact: Shakespeare even gave blessed thistle a shoutout in his play Much Ado About Nothing in the late 1500s.

The blessed thistle plant, native to the Mediterranean region, is characterized by narrow leaves, white veins, and yellow/green flowers. It belongs to the Asteraceae plant family (aka the sunflower family) along with two of its cousins - milk thistle and the artichoke. Today, blessed thistle is used for a variety of reasons, including promoting healthy breast milk supply in nursing moms (you came to the right place)! Some other potential benefits include supporting digestion, reducing stomach upset, and boosting immunity.*

Although the blessed thistle plant can take many forms, Milkflow’s Blessed Thistle formula is unique in that it is concentrated at a 4:1 ratio, meaning four parts of raw material are refined down to one part concentrated extract. The result is a high potency formula with 1,000 mg of concentrated blessed thistle per serving. In other words, you get enough blessed thistle to help boost milk supply with only 1-3 capsules per day.*

Blessed thistle is a plant found in the Mediterranean region of the world and is related to asters and daisies. Today, blessed thistle is used for a variety of reasons, including promoting healthy breast milk supply in nursing moms.

Yes! While both plants are in the aster family, they are distinct from each other. Blessed thistle has yellow flowers surrounded by spiny leaves. It grows primarily in the Mediterranean region from Southern Europe to North Africa and in Western Asia. Flowers, leaves, stems and roots have been used in folk medicine and homeopathy. The blooms of the milk thistle plant are purple. While milk thistle originated in Europe, it is now found throughout North America. The leaves and stems contain milky white sap. The seeds contain active beneficial compounds and are used to create extracts and powders. Blessed Thistle is a known galactagogue, recognized for its ability to help increase breast milk production.

In order for herbal galactagogues (or any nutrients) to work well, they have to be absorbed properly. Some moms find that they need extra support to ensure this happens. Your body also needs a healthy, nutrient-rich diet to make quality milk for your baby. The botanical digestive blend (ginger root, anise seed, orange peel, and lemon balm leaf) helps your body to absorb all nutrients optimally, to support your production of plentiful amounts of high quality milk.

Milkflow Fenugreek + Blessed Thistle Capsules contain a proprietary blend of three herbs (as opposed to one) known to help with milk supply: fenugreek, anise, AND blessed thistle. Milkflow Blessed Thistle Capsules contain a single, concentrated breast milk boosting herb: blessed thistle and NO Fenugreek. This product is for all the moms out there who want to supplement with blessed thistle, and blessed thistle alone. It also gives you the option to mix and match the herbal lactation supplements that are best for you.  Milkflow Blessed Thistle Capsules also contain a bonus digestive blend to help soothe any potential tummy upset. (surprise!)

Take it any time you want to boost breast milk production after your baby is born.

As with any supplement, you should discuss product use with your healthcare provider during pregnancy.

Metabolisms vary but you may see a difference within the first week.*

Yes.  The herbs in each of our Milkflow products act a little bit differently, so there is no reason why they can’t be used together!  If you have any questions always be sure to consult a healthcare professional.
