All people, including babies, need iron to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells, which are responsible for delivering oxygen to every cell, organ, and tissue in the body. Without enough iron, this process becomes compromised. Iron is also important for healthy brain development.

Babies get the iron they need from their mothers during the last trimester of pregnancy. When your baby is born, assuming she went full term, she has enough iron stored to last her until about the age of four months. Babies born prematurely may not have adequate iron stores to last them this long.

While many moms begin introducing solid foods (which are a source of iron) around the four-month or six-month mark, others prefer to exclusively breastfeed for awhile longer. If that’s the case, your pediatrician may recommend you give your baby an iron supplement.

The Institute of Medicine recommends 11mg of iron per day for babies 6 to 12 months old. Babies who aren’t getting this amount through breast milk, formula, or food may need an iron supplement. If you have any questions or concerns about your baby’s iron needs, talk with your pediatrician.

FAQs

No.

UpSpring Baby Multivitamin + Iron contains Vitamin D3 (as cholecalciferol) which is sourced from lanolin so it is vegetarian, but not vegan.

1 mL.

Just once a day.

You get (almost) the whole alphabet. Each serving of UpSpring Baby Iron + Multivitamin contains 15 mg of iron, along with 11 essential vitamins, including A, the B family, C, and E, plus 10 mcg (400 IU) of vitamin D3 as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for all infants.

You can place the drops directly into baby’s mouth (but we suggest you wash the dropper afterwards). You can also mix the drops with food or liquid.

No, ma’am! UpSpring Baby Iron + Multivitamin does not contains artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, sugars, or lactose.

UpSpring Baby Iron + Multivitamin has a mild grape taste.

No, because we know that remembering to put things back in the fridge is not always one of a new mom’s strong points. But do your best to close the bottle properly after each use and store it in a cool, dry, place (as in, not in that cabinet above the stove).

To avoid cross contamination, we recommend washing and drying the dropper after use.
