Understanding Postpartum Hip Changes and Hip Binding

As pregnancy progresses we watch our belly expand, but what about our hips? Some women have noticeable changes to the width of their hips during pregnancy, and others are not aware of any widening until they try to put on their jeans after losing the extra baby weight.

What Causes Postpartum Hip Change?

Postpartum hip changes are real. A woman's body, and particularly the pelvis and hips, are uniquely designed to accommodate a growing fetus and to deliver the child in childbirth. To prepare the pelvis for delivery, the hormone Relaxin is released during pregnancy to help relax the pelvic joints and ligaments as well as soften and widen the cervix. By relaxing the pelvic joints and ligaments, they loosen and expand so baby can pass through birth canal. The pelvic area most affected by Relaxin is the Symphysis Pubis and Sacroiliac Joints. Due to this natural occurrence some women do experience wider hips after pregnancy.

Can You Reduce Postpartum Hip Change?

To help reduce postpartum hip changes, some women look to hip binding. Cultures around the world have been binding their bodies after pregnancy for centuries. Binding the hips immediately after birth can help stabilize loosened pelvic joints, and help hips return to their pre-pregnancy position. Binding the hips helps narrow the circumference of the pelvic bones, so you can lose inches around your hips even without postpartum weight loss. Pelvic bones and hips will remain the size they were after binding even if your weight fluctuates. However, to be effective, hip binding must be done during the first 8 weeks postpartum while the Relaxin hormone levels are still elevated.

Shrinkx Hips is Clinically Proven to Narrow Hips

Thanks to the hormone Relaxin (truly a gift from Mother Nature) and the Shrinkx Hips postpartum hip compression belt, wider hips don't have to happen. Launched in 2009, Shrinkx Hips was the first postpartum compression wrap designed exclusively for the hips, and is the only postpartum band—or wrap—clinically proven to narrow hips. In the Shrinkx Hips Clinical Study, 95% of moms returned to their pre-pregnancy hip size, or smaller, after wearing Shrinkx Hips.

Hips Return to Normal After Pregnancy

The Postpartum Gift that Keeps Giving

Binding the hips can be done after each pregnancy as hips will expand with each delivery. Some women may not experience wider hips after their first delivery, but may see increased widening with each subsequent pregnancy. Why chance wider hips? Give binding a try. After all women have been doing it for centuries, so they must be on to something good!

Meet the Mom behind Shrinkx Hips

Janiene Allen, Inventor of Shrinkx Hips Postpartum Hip Belt

As a lifelong athlete and professional body builder, Janiene Allen quickly went back to her pre-pregnancy weight after having her first baby but although she lost all of the baby weight, she noticed her hips were wider and her clothes never quite fit the same.

Because of her body building experience Janiene knew about the hormone Relaxin and how it caused the body to become malleable during pregnancy. She also knew relaxin caused some women to experience changes to the size of their feet, ribs, and hips after childbirth. While pregnant with baby #2 Janiene decided to take a more active role in her postpartum recovery and do something to try to keep the body. As a result, she invented, tested and patented Shrinkx Hips. Learn more about Shrinkx Hips...

Sorry, Kasey. It only works when the Relaxin levels in your body are elevated which is post delivery to 8 weeks. But, keep in mind for the next baby!

I used this product with my first baby and it worked perfectly. I had my second 5 weeks ago and have been using it again. My hips don't seem to be moving back quite as fast as they did with my son. I also sort of remember my body continuing to shift for several months postpartum(even after the initial 8). Am I dreaming? Maybe I'm just more impatient this time around because I know it worked so well the first time. Those weeks are also wrapped up in sleepless nights so I simply don't remember that well.

Can I use the shrinkxhips binder with the c panty?? I have c panty from my last baby and had to have a repeat c section. I'm two weeks postpartum and have been wearing c panty with a pad for cushion on the incision. I'm about to stop wearing the pad liner now that my incision is healing and would love to use the hip binder too if they can be used together.

Yes, you can use after your second or third baby but it has to be in the first 8 weeks. Jaqui, sorry we don't have a product to widen hips.

Relaxin hormones are greatly reduced 8 weeks postpartum. If you want to wear the belt now, we recommend you wearing the maximum amount per day.

I learned this two years too late, any options for me? Alternatives, or synthetic relaxin? Also I am still lactating and I truly think my are hips still expanding, having increased pain year two. Might I still be creating relaxin? Is that the same chem that makes baby sleepy after breastfeeding?

Then later can use your device I guess. My question plus is how to release this relaxin without pregnancy.. specialy for men.. actually I'm thinking if this can help me to tighten my hips bones..or something to widen my ribs cage n shoulders. Thank you very much Regards Reda

Hi Reda, Wider hips during childbirth is definitely a plus! To shrink them after delivery, start wearing Shrinkx Hips immediately after delivery and for the first 8 weeks. Thanks for your question. UpSpring

How do I know what size to choose? I was size small before pregnancy and now most likely M/L, what size belt should I buy?
Date 7/20/2016
UpSpring
Hi Tatiana, To determine the best size, you should use your current hip measurement (during pregnancy). If you are 40 inches or less then I recommend the XS/S. If you are over 40 inches, then the M/L will give you the best fit. We recommend you use your current hip measurement to make sure that the belt will have a good fit right away. One of the great things about Shrinkx Hips is that the belt can narrow and adjust to a smaller size as your hips narrow.

I have only been using DermalMD Glute Booster Serum for about a month and I have already noticed a difference! My bum is noticeably firmer and rounder! I am actually horrified by the comments on this post - firstly you are not "disgusting" your body has grown and birthed a human being, this is amazing! Secondly, surely with a good balanced diet and regular exercise (and let's face it there's enough running around with a new baby) you will return to pre-baby weight and "forcing" the hips back together too soon must surely risk damage in the future! I only searched for hip compression due to a post I saw using a scarf/rebozo, personally I'm perfectly happy to let my body return to "normal" naturally and hope I never feel the way you all do!!

I have had 2 hip surgerys in the past. I had to have pins put in my hip joints. Will this product still help. My hips have widened with a great amount of pain but im worried about them going back with the pins?
Date 8/29/2016
UpSpring
Hi Lisa, Our Shrinkx Hips works with the hormone Relaxin, which is released in the body to help widen hips in preparation for delivery. Relaxin keeps pelvic joints soft and malleable. Since the hormone is present for 8 weeks postpartum, our Shrinkx Hips helps gently guide hips to the pre-pregnancy position. If you have any further feedback or questions, feel free to contact our customer service. We are happy to help!
Date 8/29/2016
UpSpring
Hi Deanna, Thank you for your inquiry. Our Shrinkx Hips is designed to work with the hormone Relaxin, which is elevated in a woman for up to 8 weeks postpartum. I hope this information is helpful!

Hi i was wondering even though it has been 3month and a half since i gave birth i can still do the binding or the shrinks? Would it at least reduce some of it?
Date 9/18/2016
UpSpring
Hi Jazzy, Unfortunately, you're past the 8 weeks where the Relaxin levels are elevated in your body which is necessary for hip binding to be effective. However, our Shrinkx Belly Postpartum Belly Wrap can be used for up to a year after delivery.

I have extremely large hips from genetics and also having multiple children. I'm measuring at the top end of the scale size (49 inches) and I have not had my baby yet (hopefully I won't get any wider *fingers crossed*). I am wondering if this product will work well for someone with such wide hips. Is it unrealistic to hope for multiple inches of shrinkage to occur? Also are the sizes accurate up to 52 inches? I'm worried I might not fit the biggest size for sale postpartum. Thanks in advance for answering :)
Date 10/17/2016
UpSpring
Mikayla, You can wear Shrinkx Hips up to 8 weeks postpartum. Since you are 5 weeks out, we recommend wearing the product for the maximum amount of time per day.
Date 10/17/2016
UpSpring
Hi Rachel, You can read reviews from other moms who have used the product on our Shrinkx Hips page for their results since women are all different. Yes, the sizes are accurate but the product offers adjust-ability to fit your comfort level. Thanks!

Are you able to wear the hips wrap and the belly wrap at the same time? How do we figure out the best size for our bellys (s, m, l)?
Date 11/7/2016
UpSpring
Hi Ani, Yes, you can wear the Shrinkx Hips and Shrinkx Belly together since they work on different parts of the body. To determine best size for Shrinkx Belly, you will need to measure the circumference of your belly. if you are 1-2 months from delivery, subtract 3-5 inches to determine best sizing. If you have already delivered, we recommend using your current measurements. Thanks and please contact customer service if you need assistance.

Hi Leslie, For best results, we recommend wearing Shrinkx Hips for as many hours of the day for the first 8 weeks postpartum. Please do not use the band when you feel any pain or discomfort. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our customer service.

Are there any risks to be considered about before using this? Personally I do not understand why women would be so concerned as to "shrink their hips" after pregnancy, but I'm curious.

I have been using the hip belt and belly wrap since the birth of my son. I find them a little awkward at times, so I take them off. I'm at the 6 week mark, but will my hips start to loosen out again when I'm not using them? Should I wear them all day, all night to get the full benefit for the next two weeks, even if it's uncomfortable??
Date 11/28/2016
UpSpring
Hi Ali, For best results, we do recommend wearing the band as much as possible for both day and night. During the first 8 weeks postpartum, Relaxin keeps the hip bones malleable. If you have any questions regarding how to wear, please contact our customer service directly so that we may assist you. Thanks!

I had baby#1 and I notice my hips have gotten wider. Im having baby#2 is it possible my hips could go back normal before baby#1? and do you deliver to the UK?! How much is it for the band? Baby#2 ain't due for a while yet but is it okay to stil order one to have it ready for when Ive had the baby.
Date 3/22/2017
UpSpring
Hey Sharday! Thanks for your great question about your postpartum hip changes that can happen after having baby #2. You're in luck! As you get closer to delivery the hormone relaxin is at its highest and will remain high up until 8 weeks postpartum. What we've seen with our other moms is that nearly 95% of them who use the ShrinkxHips from the day of birth through the first 8 weeks see their hips go back to prebaby (and some smaller) size! We do not currently ship to the UK, however, you can find a list of our list of International Retailers here: www.upspringbaby.com/international Since you've already had a baby, you know how crazy things can be those first few weeks so you're wise to go ahead and buy ShrinkxHips now, that way it'll be one less thing to remember before your new LO arrives! Please let us know if you have any other questions, we'd be happy to help! Send us an email directly: customerservice@upspringbaby.com Thanks again and congratulations!

My hips really widened after my baby, he's almost a year. My question is, after my next baby , if I try the shrinkxhips will my hips go back into shape like it was before my first one?? And for now.. What exercise can I try to narrow mt hips??
Date 3/27/2017
UpSpring
Hey Ayesha, great question! The answer is...yes! You absolutely can wear Shrinkx Hips after your next delivery! During each pregnancy your body will release the relaxin hormone which makes hips and pelvic joints soft and malleable. Wearing Shrinkx Hips at this time can help your hips return to their pre-pregnancy size, or smaller. The relaxin is at its highest right before birth and up to 8 weeks post delivery. Congratulations on your soon-to-arrive bundle of joy!

Actually not true that binding only works 8 weeks PP. anything you use to bind your body will shape it. Maybe during those 8 weeks is faster but doesn't mean you are doomed cause you didn't do it in that time. People use corsets to shake hourglass figures and not after having a baby and it works.
Date 3/27/2017
UpSpring
Jane, thank you for your comment! You're absolutely correct that binding can work no matter what time in your life, however, we believe you misunderstood our comment as we said "relaxin is at its highest right before birth and up to 8 weeks post delivery." We never said that you can't bind after that, however, the relaxin hormone, which makes hips and pelvic joints soft and malleable, will be on the decline and make the binding process less effective than if used while the relaxin is at its highest. We love the discussion points and appreciate you!

Sharday, Great question! To purchase Shrinkx Hips in the UK, please contact our Shrinkx distributor, Bloom and Grow. You can also find a list of our international distributors here: www.upspringbaby.com/international As for helping to lose the baby weight, Shrinkx Hips is exclusive to the hips but we do make a postpartum belly wrap, Shrinkx Belly that is also available through our UK distributor. I miscarried at 12weeks, baby measured at 9 weeks. I just had a d&c. Do hips spread this early? I have shrinx hips from previous baby and I'm not getting pregnant again.

Hi Rae, our deepest condolences. Your little one is not forgotten and we hope you're giving yourself grace as you adjust to the pain of loss. As for your hips spreading, it's unlikely. The majority of hip spread usually occurs in the third trimester when relaxin is released at elevated levels. What is the difference between the basic and the ultra hips band? Also, could I sleep in the band instead of wear during the day?
Date 11/17/2017

Hi Suz! Thank you for your comment and your question about the difference between the basic and ultra is a great question! The basic is a 'one size fits all' and the ultra comes in two sizes and has triple compression points and allows you to further customize the compression on your hips! Shrinkx Hips Ultra also features and interior silicon strip to help keep the belt in place. Please feel free to reach out to our customer service team if you have other questions.
